Task 2a- Opportunties

Opportunities of idents

Task 2 a) Write a series of blog posts (Prezi, Emaze, Thinglink, or Powtoon) and embed at least 5 examples of idents explaining opportunities of using TV idents (using pre-selected and own examples)

i.  creation of corporate identity
ii.  branding of content
iii. creation of tone
iv. appeal to target audience
v.  encouragement of brand loyalty

Before creating your ident you need to decide who your target audience is and how it is going to appeal to them. By having a good understanding of your audience you can then chose a style that will suite them and the content which they will enjoy watching.

One opportunities of an ident is the tone. Tone is the thing which makes the audience feel when watching an ident this could be sadness, happiness, anger etc. By doing this it keeps the audience entertained and will create brand loyalty. This is an opportunity because through the tone the audience will get an understanding of what the channel is about. The main benefit of this is that you can be as imaginative as you want expanding your creativity also you can try and connect with your target audience by creating a tone of your ident attracting a wider range.

A second opportunity of an ident would be the channels identity, the channels identity needs to be recognisable to the target audience to make it successful. Every tv channel will create their ident to show their channels identity making them different from the other channels. This is an opportunity because it's a change for media produces to give their channel a personality making them stand out from the others, helping to attract the audience into watching their channel rather than the other competitors, also to help the audience recognise their channel.

Branding of content is what is included in the tv channel that will be shown through the ident giving the tv channels an understanding of what their channel is about and what they will be showing. This is called segregation it is where the channel reveals what is coming up next on the channel and what will be shown later. In the tv industry it is important to brand and promote your companies channel to its target audience so that the audience know what the channel is about making encouraging them to watch your companies a channel, recognising the channel from other tv channels. They do this by including a screen squeeze which will interrupt the channel that i a originally being aired including a voice over or clips of the show that is coming up next on the channel.

Creating brand loyalty for a channel is important as it will helps make your companies channel more popular. Encouraging your audiences to continue to watch your channel. You can do this by creating idents that will be memorable for the audience helping them recognise the channel from the rest in the industry. Creators of idents need to have a good understanding of their audience and the things they will be interesting in watching by having knowledge of their demographics and interests. The channel BBC have created their own suite of idents that includes the continuity of the same shape being a circle to symbolise the globe inferring that their channel is national.

Task 2B- Limitations

Limitations of an ident

In this report I will be discussing the limitations of an ident giving details and examples to back up my reasons.

Resolution is one of the limitations creators have to deal with. The reason for this is because of the pixels that are within the ident shown on tv to their target audiences. There are four different resolutions these are between standard definition and ultra definition, such as 144p, 480p, 720p, 1080p and 4k. Depending on what television the audience will have it will start and the rendering period during the process showing the images each of 60 frames per second.

A second limitation would be colour this is because certain colours will appear distorted on the tv making it unable to show to audiences. Safe colours are known to be used by media producers as these certain colours are appropriate to be used as won't appear distorted. To make your ident original colours like purple that are used in the BBC three idents will not make your ident successful because the colour purple is recognised by the audience of being used by BBC three meaning that it may confuse the audience of which ident the channel is for.

Another limitation would be the aspect ratio. The reason why this is an limitation is because the different sizes of sources such as on tv, phones computers etc. Nowadays the size of people's tv are 16:9 which is a widescreen making it better to watch tv as you can get a more accurate view that people in the 80s wouldn't of had. Their size of tv which was known box television was the aspect ration 4:3.An example would be from the channels ident BBC one shown in the year 1997. During this time people didn't have TVs with the aspect ratio of 16:9 meaning they wouldn't have been able to have a good view of the channel cutting out some of the content. They would've had known a box tv which is a square screen having the ratio 0f 4:3.

Lastly typography would be another limitation in idents because the creators can find it difficult to find the most accurate type of font to suit their channels identity. This could make it difficult for audiences to get an understanding of the tone of the ident and may get the wrong impression. The typography for the channel BBC Three uses writing that is curved making it informal suitable for younger audiences, however before the channel used bold writing that was more formal which wouldn't have been of interest for young audiences.

Size

Another limitation of making an ident is the size, size is a limitation because of the size of the TV screen may result in affecting the quality of the image for the viewers.  If you have the correct size of the TV screen then you are able to fit the ident on the screen appropriately. For example the TV channel BBC 4 ident of the office the sizing of this ident is correct insuring that the audience can see all the whole image of their screen.

group suite of idents

Tone - Motivational
The tone of the ident is motivational,
Theme
the theme is blood, sweat and tears.
Target audience
This ident is targeting men, we known this because it features a male character.
Continuity of design
The similarities in each ident is that they all incorporate slow motion in each ident the logo is also placed in the centre of the screen in every ident. Each ident will represent a male character

Task 1b purposes and identity of idents

Design:
  • density of information
  • space and time
  •  screen tempo
  • interaction with viewers
  • information-led
  • entertainment-led
Purpose:
  • identity
  • branding
  • marketing
  • packaging and re-packaging
  • scheduling
  • segmentation within scheduling

Channel 4 - Tokyo Ident

The channel 4's ident that featured Tokyo was released in 2004 it uses the theme of night life inferring that it was shown in the evening to its audience. This is an example of an ident where the design has a purpose. Channel 4 use their ident to show the channels content being diverse appealing to ordinary lifestyles withing their programming on shows such as 'Shameless', 'misfits', 'the undatebales' etc. The audience watch the ident seeing the formation of the 4 which happens at the end of the ident meaning that viewers have to wait to see what channel the ident it 4, this captures the audience attention as they wait to see what channel it is for. The use of Tokyo infers diversity. The designers of the ident create it in a way the audience can interact making members of the audience feel interested and encourage to watch the channel. In terms of information led there is a voice over during the ident informing the viewers what is coming up next. One of the main purposes for any ident is the scheduling of programmes.

 BBC

The idents for BBC all include in some way a circle for example one ident for BBC used the animation of Hippos swimming in the formation of a circle this was released in 2009. The circle symbolises the show being national as it is showed in numbers of other countries. The design of the ident being for the time and space from the designers of the broadcast were given a certain time to complete their final idea for the channels ident. The main purpose for this ident was packaging and re packaging , since the year 2006 the broadcasters decided to include the shape circles in their BBC ident. The ident of hippos infer that the audience may be watching a nature programme next on the channel.

Sky Movies

Marketing is where a company wants to sell their product to their audience, for example the idents for sky movies markets other movies to make the audience want to watch them such as the ident that featured Star Wars. In the ident clips from the movie was incorporated in the design of the ident marketing the movie. Meaning that this ident purpose was to promote the movie Star Wars to their target audience. We know the movie Star Wars was first made by Lucas films which was owned by 20th century fox, both owned by Sky therefore this is an example of synergy. The purpose of this ident is entertainment-led as it focuses on a particular audience who enjoy the star wars movies.

Sky 1

This ident is very family related as it includes the theme of Christmas which involves families as it's a time for families to come together. The typography in this ident is created to show the seasonal segmentation which is Christmas, we see the logo creating brand identity. The TV ident is made to give the channels identity from which people can then identify the channels content from the ident.  The ident is positioned in the middle of the screen, where the number 1 quickly forms into a blue tree.

BBC three

Re branding the channels is where the design or apperance of a channel changes so that it appeals to a larger audience. An example of this would be BBC three who target young people, they changed the design of their logo as wanted to make it attract their audience more. Instead of their first idea which was a simple design with white bold text on top of a blue background. They now choose to change the background colour to pink also the font which has round edges and is joint together. The use of pink makes it more colourful and vibrant for younger audiences.

To sell the song
The purpose of a music video is to promote and sell the song for the artist creating an audience that watch their music videos. They do this by creating an character for the artist that the audience will gives interest to and will become a role model to them. Every song has its own music video to go with it this gives the most views of the video promoting the artist further. One way which the artist can sell the song through the music video is monetize, this is where the record sell the artist song through distributions such as streaming sites like sound cloud and Spotify. The music video is basically the advertisement for the song where it will help to gain fans for the artist and exposure.

Promotional for the artist
The promotion for the artist is important for the success of both record label and artist who will gain fame and create an image for the artist to entertain their audience. You can promote the artist through their music videos, also the use of social media as it allows their track to be heard by multiple people around the world getting a wide range for their audience.

The music video can also be shown on more outlets than the film meaning it creates a short film for viewers an example of this would be the track thriller by Michael Jackson has his music video was a narrative type video at the end this is known as an opening scene or background scene.

To sell the song, invoke a reaction from the audience
Music videos are designed mainly for the purpose of selling the song, they sometimes use new or upcoming artists to promote themselves as it allows to create an image where their career will start through social networks. The image can also generate more money for the artist also for the record label. Some music videos are purposely made to get a reaction from the audience, for instant a music video that comes across very weird and strange then people are likely to be shocked by this which then will cause people to them discuss the subject showing exposure for the artist as the music video gains more views becoming viral.

An example of this type of music video would be Nicki Minaj anaconda which shows the character of the artist being exploitive and confident. The music video includes the Artist twerking and dancing in a sexual manner making her audience attracted to her appearance as well as encouraging them to buy tickets for her concert as they enjoy her performance in the music video and this is what they hope to see live on stage.

Exposure and Expansion of the Artist
Exposure is very important for the artist for their music videos it shows the audience the image of the artist and creates a false image for the artist. Image is very important because it gives the audience an image of what the artist is like.

Music videos play a vital part in the exposure of an artist as it promotes their image which is then used to gain revenue and endorsement deals with products, showing that the artist is liked because fans buy their products.
However, for unsigned artists like scribz the numbers are in the fan base conveying a certain lifestyle grabbing the attention from the audience this shows that unsigned artist can gain popularity through social media a creative way to promote and establish the artist in the music industry.

To give the audience a better understanding of the song

Often songs will have meaning, Music Videos are often used to develop this meaning behind the song and use a visualization to create an image for the artist, by doing this you are able to give the audience a visual aspect of the song from a visual perspective and from a different outlet. Through the narrative of the story in the music video will help get the message across to the audience. An example of this would be from the artist Michael Jackson who creates most of his music video to get across a message to his audience such as the music video for 'Man in the Mirror'. Not only does the lyrics give meaning but also the visuals as the audience can see problems going on in the world such as children starving, this creates an impact on the audience as they are being informed by the artist and are more likely to interact with the message that the artist is trying to get across.

 Product Placement
Product Placement is designed to sell and promote the products of the companies in which they usually embedded into a music video. Product placement is where you see the product everywhere not just in music videos but on TV, billboards, newspapers, magazines etc. It’s known as an advertising technique used by companies to insure the promotion of their own products allowing more awareness of that product. If a music video is predicted to be popular than companies will want to use that video to advertise their product. They do this by asking the producers permission, then asking them to include the product in their video paying them money to do so. The outcome of this will mean that they will earn more money from their product as people will want to buy it knowing that their favourite artist has been seen with it.

It is especially popular in music videos for record label companies and artists related products such an phone because he was promote the product this also shows that audience what the artists likes and the label will get money for having product placement used. An example of where this has been used in a music video was by the artist Lady Gaga in the music video for her track 'Telephone' we see the company of ray bans has advertised their product in the video as we notice the artist herself wearing it.

Synergy
Synergy is where two products or companies combine to make a video using the video as a platform to give them success. For example a music video may be made to increase publicity for a film. One example would be the music video 'you know my name' the official video for the James bond film casino Royale in 2006, starring the artist Chris Cornell.
Promote music festivals
Music videos are often used to promote other music related products. In the last decade Festivals and tours have become more important because the artist can exposure and gain popularity tin the summer by touring around the world which can help them reach a wider audience and with the use of interactive media an example of this would be Reading Festival.
Generates new market for Record Company
Record companies such as Sony music group and Universal music use music videos as an income for the song. They do this by making the video as accessible as possible to viewers uploading the video on as many different outlets as possible such as YouTube the purpose of this is so that they are able to sell the image the artist by making the music video go viral.
Selling an Image

Artist will often sell an image or look to the audience is used to create and sell a false image which convey the ideal lifestyle because it gives the audience and role model. An example of this is would be Rihanna, who has had a massive change of appearance. This illustrated the fact that her image had change dramatically and was seen to the audience as a sex symbol.  As a result of this her sales increased and the song became hugely successful.

Task  1
i) Channels Identity
The purpose for Radio and television idents are to create an identity for the channels based on their content.

ii) to brand the channel
Idents are created based upon  the target audience making sure that it creates an brand for the overall production this will provide information such as the theme and the style of the broadcaster such as channel 4

iii) Brand loyalty
Brand loyalty is created for a specific channel or programme insuring that it appeals to the audience. This is done by achieving an understanding of their demographics and how they access the content such as by an app or catch up services by having an understanding of your audience you are able to create a brand loyalty for a certain programme.

iv) to market
Marketing is important for any channel because it advertises the content through the creation of the tv ident which will be created to appeal towards their chosen audience with the use of social media helping to create and identity for that channel or programme.

v) segmentation
Segmentation is when the TV channel will have a break before their channel begins as it advertises the programmes content.

vi) provide information
This introduces information about the channel during the ident because it gives the audience an insight about the overall programme or the theme

vii) rebrand the channelh
When rebranding a channel this must be done over a period of time this is because the target audience are aging along with the channel such as changing content or other features if you have a good understanding of your audience then you can create loyalty by keeping up with the on going trends.

More 4

The more 4 Christmas ident uses the theme of Christmas to relate to the seasonal period for the audience. The ident created a Christmassy atmosphere whilst watching the TV for in particular family time.  The ident was a simple idea but still effective as it helped people get in the sprit for Christmas. The ident was different making it unique from the others as it incorporated the more 4 logo, the idea was simple not including too much in the shot.

ITV

The purpose of the ITV ident it create to make a statement to their audience, the statement is used in the same colours for the pride showing peace and happiness to show respect for all gays and lesbians, this shows that the channel can be seen by everyone from every aspect of demographics. The logo for the channel is seen during the ident through the change of colour as the flag goes up and down.

BBC one

This ident uses a range of colours making it bright and colourful to watch for the audience, we see the people wearing different coloured raincoats on their bikes that make the formation of an O this is makes it very creative and unique. Because BBC one are known mainly for news they included the topic of weather in their ident to relate to weather news. The location of the ident appears to be in the London area showing that the programme is a British programme and that most of the programmes are filmed in London.

Pixar ident

The first Pixar short film was titled Luxo Jr, it was a story about a lamp and the relationship between him and his mum. The colours used in the ident are quite dull such as greys which creates a dramatic effect for the audience as it sets a mood before the film is about to start. The use of a child like lamp relates to the target audience of young children this is effective because it makes them more likely to feel engaged, the characteristics of the character being quite playful and we watch the lamp jumping around playing. The short film helped to put Pixar’s name out in the film industry and has become part of their logo.

Film 4

The ident for Film 4 was Christmas related which I discovered on YouTube, the duration of the ident was 26 seconds long which is the expected length an ident should be. The ident includes no animation which most idents generally do. In the ident there is a Christmas bauble falling in slow motion as it reaches the ground the screen splits into 3 this is creative as it makes the audience feel engaged and makes it more interesting. The ident includes a voice over which the tone of the voice is very relaxed and soft as it introduces what is coming up next on the channel. The ident includes the logo as the beginning as well as at the end.

BBC three

This ident has been created to suit a younger audience we know this by the style of the text and the range of colours making it bright and colourful to attract younger audiences also it is very fast pace so that younger people can be encouraged to watch as the have quick attentions span. The BBC logo is featured in the ident however the BBC logo is very basic and not as excited as the three which is seen larger and more colourful making it interesting for the audience.

Task 4
An ident is used to help grab the audiences attention of a channel of programme advertising the content which the channel is about and their theme. Idents are all different as they are created based on the channels audiences which they are aiming towards for instance if they have a young audience they are likely to use bright colours and big and bold text rather with and older audience using formal style font and less colours. The purpose of creating an ident is so that people will know what channel it is also promoting the channel this has changed over time in the tv industry as idents have become more interesting for audiences to watch and help encourage them to watch the channel it is for. The channels ident will have an identity due to the fact
