Camera movements

A track away is when the camera is moving away from the artist. Commonly in music videos this will be used when the artist is walking towards the camera. This is created by placing the camera on a dolly and then moving it away from the scene.

 A tilt is another camera movement that can be used in music videos, tilts are commonly used in hip hop music as it gives an unstable effect. The reason for using a tilt is so that a composition can work well in a frame. Tilts can be used to tell a story revealing something which is coming towards or away. When creating a tilt you must make sure that the camera is steady when the filming is taking place. From the position you then can move the camera up or down creating a tilt movement. 

Another camera movement is dolly in, this is when the camera  moves slowly in towards the subject. This can be done by putting the camera on a dolly and moving it towards the artist showing a zoom. This can be used to capture the artist facial expressions also the importance of that character as they are the main focus point as the character will appear larger as the camera gets closer.

Lastly an Arc this is where the camera moves around the artist in a music video, whilst the artist stays in the middle. This can be create by placing the camera on a dolly and moving it around the artist . This movement suggests the world revolves around the artist impacting their life.

Handheld is when the camera is not on a tripod and is filmed whilst holding in the camera operators hand, this means they can move with the camera which creates an shaking effect. This also creates an edgy atmosphere of realism, handheld can also suggest that the character is in distress this is because the camera is shaking showing chaos and struggle. It usually would be used in a performance type music video as it gives the viewers a sense of the performance that artist gives making them want to buy the artist concert tickets.

Camera angles

There are a variety of different camera angles used in music videos to show different meanings. Such as tilt also known as canter or a Dutch angle. This is when the camera is at an angle which is slanted to one side showing a tilt. This is used in music videos to create a dramatic effect for viewers also showing the producers creativity. It can suggest a feeling of action in the scene.

Another camera angle used in music video is the high angles, high angle are used to show the character is sad or depressed. To create a high angle you have to aim the camera directly above the artist filming from above you can do this by having a taller tripod of from a high ground.

Then there is a low angle which is the opposite of a high angle instead of filming from above you are filming from below the artist. Low angles are used in music videos to show dominance and power of the character.  To create a low angle you simple have to film putting the camera on floor level filming upwards.

Lastly a birds eye view which is when the camera is filming from directly above the artist. You can use a drone to create this angle. This gives viewers a sense of looking down on the artist, it also can be used to show the location at a birds eye aspect, the angle is created to show different perspective of an object. This type of angle is generally used at the beginning of music videos to introduce the artist or to create an intense atmosphere. An example of this would be in the music video for 'Bang Bang' by the following artist Nicki Minaj, Jessie J and Arianna Grande the technique is used at the beginning of the music video showing a birds eye view of the location where the music video is being filmed at.
