re sub pre production report

Introduction

The purpose of this pre- production report is to outline and detail the requirements to produce my one minute short film. Such as funding, budget etc.

Funding and Budgeting

I will be using equipment applied by my college for free of cost such as cameras, tripod and lighting also an editing suite to edit my final short film. Although, my college will not be covering the funds for my production, meaning that myself will be providing the funding for my production. I will be using kick starter for my funding, kick starter is an easy and simple way for people to look at others projects to get inspiration and influence. If your project is successful being able to reach its funding goal all pledges are then charged. However, is the project is unsuccessful not reaching its goal then no one is then charged? Kick starter is a reliable source for funding many people in the industry for music and film used it to help them self-fund for their projects making it successful.  The funding will cover the following; catering budget, transport, equipment, clothing and props. Since the actors i will be using are not professional actors, I won't need to pay them.  Altogether, my average budget total will be around £40 - £50

Time

Deadlines are very important, if deadlines have not been met we therefore are behind schedule also we are having to pay more money because the deadline has not been met making the film not finished and presented on time. Timing helps us as a group to be organised and prepared meeting all requirements needed to produce are short film. We are very lucky that our equipment is available to us at all times when needed making us not having to pay extra money to hire equipment for a longer period of time. The maximum time we should spend on shooting should be no more than a couple of hours as it’s a short film it will be very quick to film. However when editing the shots it may take up to a  day maximum to make sure it has been will edited including things such as sounds, transitions to insure that it is interesting to watch.

Copyright

Copyright is something you must be aware of before making your film without knowing the importance of it may result in serious penalties. The law of copyright is used to help protect the use of someone else work. The copyright laws are set in place to protect originality of work. You must be given permission to use others work if unable to do so then you are then therefore breaking the law committing a crime. If I am unable to receive permission I then must use copyright free material.

Crew and Personnel

The three main roles of producing a short film are the Director, Cameraman and the producer. Everyone must be well communicated with each other in order to help organised and produce a good short film. The role of the producer is very difficult and time consuming as they have multiple jobs to do before the deadline meaning they must have skills such as hard-working, organization and planning skills, they also must be creative exploring their ideas further. The two most important roles is the director and the producer as they tell you what to do for your job as well as their own, they also make sure everyone else is doing their job in the right way making sure they are not slacking as if you do they you will miss deadlines causing more money needed to be spent in order to get it done. The director must be also well hard working most importantly be able to tell people what to do having skills such leadership and communication. The cameraman must know the technical basics of photography knowing the meaning of every type of shot there is, to then use in the short film expressing meaning and purpose. They also must be able to solve problems to handle production when scenes don’t work out as planned due to complications such as weather.

Certificate and Regulation

The BBFC is a nongovernmental organization who put classifications on all films and games in the UK. Starting at a U as the youngest audience who can watch a movie, then a 12/12A those who are 12 and below the differences between 12 and 12A is you have to watch the movie with an adult. The next two highest category is 15 and 18. Knowing what is suitable for a 15 year old I will be making the age certificate for my short a 15 this because it will include scenes of violence which are not suitable for younger audiences.

Health and safety
Whilst filming health and safety checks must be made before this is called a risk assessment so that we prevents possible accidents from occurring. By checking things such as no lose wires or cables can help stop people from injuring themselves but also saving us time and money that would need to be spent to replace that person and pay for their medical bill.
Facilities
The equipment I will be using to create my short film include a camera, tripod and lightening. Luckily for me my college are allowing me to borrow these for free of cost making me having to not pay a lot on money on production equipment. These are all required to make my short film be of a high standard and high quality of work which are needed to make any film.
Post-production equipment includes mainly the editing suite and the final cut software to edit also adding in transitions to the film making it further more interesting. After finishing completely shooting my film I will need to edit the shots putting them together making it officially finished to present. I will need to book out the editing suite to use whenever needed lucky for me this is also free but if I had to realistically pay it would be up to £200 per day. The software needed for editing is called final cut it allows you to edit your film of a high standard making git appear professional.
When making a film you have to rent out the facilities such as an editing suite also buy or hire equipment making the production very expensive. You also will need to rent your location which could cost between £100-£200 per day.
Materials
Materials included such as sound library this gives you permission to use certain sounds on top of your film. It allows that person to keep their idea their own not allowing others to steal it and making their own money on it. It requires a written permission form from the company that produce that film making that person have permission. Also things such as audio material which are copyright holders like recording companies, artists and others in the music industry, audio material is illegal in the UK and if you go against it you can suffer the outcome of going to court and paying a fine based on the law you have broken. When recording a film it is very important to not use others work as this is therefore breaking the law. Copyright is the right of copying someone else’s work or their idea if you copyright you must ask for permission first.
 Costs and clearances
Cost and clearances is when you own a written document showing you have the right to use a piece of work as your own such as the scripts, clips, stock footage and images. So if anything is to happen you will have a clearance of your film.
Contributors
The contributors involved in making a film are people who are very experienced and talented in what they do. These are people such as talents known as the actors and characters in the film. Talents get paid up to thousands of pounds for starring in a film which as the producer you must pay them. Firstly you need to find the right people to star in your film making sure they are perfect for the certain character you want them to be to help you, you must look at their personality and abilities comparing them with others to see who is best for the job. For my short film I will need a maximum of four talents to play the roles. A talent release must be used with professional actors and actresses. If you are having children star in your film them you must receive permission from their parents allowing them to this is known as a minor release.
Locations
For my short film I have chosen my location to be an abandoned car park this is because I feel this is a great location to gives the audience a sense of atmosphere and suspense making the thriller more interesting to watch. For this you must use identification which deals with locations of where you wish to film. When choosing your location you will need to get permission otherwise you would be committing an offense having to pay a massive fine for not receiving permission making you breaking the law. Locations such as airports would cost around £700 to film at however filming at a location such as a hotel could cost around £250. Locations is very important when thinking of where to film because it sets the scene for your film. Also needing the approval of the police department so they know you’re not breaking the law in what you are doing.
For any film you will need to add a Reece report that shows the locations you are using and the information such as transport. You will need to call the owner of the location booking in a time and day to film there you also will need to fill out a release form.
