THE CALL (2013)
TYPE Feature
APPROX. RUNNING MINUTES 94
RELEASE DATES 20/09/2013
BBFCINSIGHT Contains strong language, bloody violence and sustained threat
GENRE(S) Thriller, Drama, Crime
DIRECTOR(S) Brad Anderson
CAST INCLUDES Halle Berry, Abigail Breslin, Morris Chestnut, Michael Eklund, David Otunga, Michael Imperioli
SUMMARY In the high-stakes, edge-of-your-seat thriller The Call, a thin thread of survival separates a teenage kidnap victim from her only hope: a compassionate, steady voice on the other end of a cell phone marshaling all the resources she can to find her. Veteran 911 Emergency Call Center operator Jordan (Halle Berry) has the kind of job that's not for the faint of heart: navigating the public's distress in order to save lives. But when a young woman's frantic report of a prowler ends tragically, Jordan is devastated. Reassessing her life, Jordan wonders if perhaps she's experienced her last fraught-filled phone call. With a supportive cop (Morris Chestnut) for a boyfriend, maybe it's time to step back, enjoy life, and teach others the ins and outs of her high-pressure profession. That lifeline to strangers isn't over yet, though. When average American teenager Casey (Abigail Breslin), is abducted by a serial killer (Michael Eklund), she manages to place a 911 call from the trunk of the killer's car. Jordan, leading a group of new recruits through the massive Call Center operation, is in earshot of the call. It's an all-too familiar scenario for this experienced public servant, but before long, Casey's situation reveals itself as eerily, shockingly familiar. There's only one thing Jordan can do: take charge in a way she's never done before. She must turn Casey into a partner in helping them track down the killer, and prove that this call is Jordan's calling.

Saw II follows on the heels of Saw, as another taught, tense thriller. The mark of a great thriller/shocker/horror movie is the number of twists and turns, and this is what identifies Saw II as one of the better members of its genre.
Few movies keep me on the edge of my seat. This was one of them. There was no one dozing off during this flick. And the number of folks who walked out to take/make cell phone calls was the lowest I've ever seen.
Like Saw, this sequel is more than a little bloody in some places, but that's to be understood. It was never promoted as a walk in the park. If you're in the mood for a thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat, this is worth a try.

Good thriller with a couple of weak spots

I enjoyed this film quite a bit: it kept a good pace of tension which makes for a good thriller. The acting is good (no academy awards), and it did a good job of giving a glimpse into the operations of 911 call centers which is a fresh topic - and it did so without dragging the pace.
The main bad guy becomes ever more creepy as the plot progresses which helps build the tension. The ending takes an interesting twist which, in the moment, doesn't feel quite as out-of-character as others describe - mainly due to a good segue shot that probably took more than a few takes to get right.
The weak spots consist mainly of some CSI style technology leaps that only technology morons would buy into, and a single bit of clumsiness that just feels scripted. Unfortunately the CSI technology leaps are very popular in Hollywood (to my dismay) and the bit of clumsiness is key to the plot progression.
If one or two minor transgressions make you feel like you wasted your money, wait for it to show up on Netflix. If you enjoy a good edge of your seat thriller and can overlook the transgressions, go see it!

The Call kept my interest and had everyone wanting to scream at the screen and tell the characters what to do and urge them along. The characters would alternate between overcoming their emotions and rising to the challenge and falling prey to them at just the wrong moment. There was a constant sense of tension during the 911 call and the walk through of getting the girl to safety. Be prepared to feel that adrenaline and tension for longer than your body is normally used to. You may feel just as drained after a call as a 911 operator does...
I really enjoyed the level of detail the film makers put into showing us the world of a 911 operator and what they go through on a day to day basis. It's pretty fascinating. I know I could never do that kind of job. That kind of stress day in and day out has to wear on a person and probably often hardens them.
The ending involves a twist I wasn't expecting, and gains my respect for that, but it was still somewhat disappointing because I wanted it to go further. Those who have seen the movie will know what I mean.

This is NOT a movie where people walk backwards into dark rooms. This is NOT a movie where people pull sheets off bodies. That's all too predictable for Saw II. In fact, there's virtually nowhere in this film, where you can say that you've got it figured out.
And this movie left more than a few folks in the audience waiting for another sequel.

One of the best movies I have seen in a long time.

The first Saw really through me through some spins and caught me off guard for originality, Saw 2 is leagues above the first. Saw 2 runs with the same game based theme as the first, with clues for both the characters and the audience about what might happen next, but it takes the game to a completely different level. Just when things start to come together there is another twist to leave the viewer on the edge of their seat for what may come next. Without seeming to give everything away the movie was made to give it all away, but no one can catch all the clues because they have been pulled so deep into the movie. I highly recommend this one.

what does U mean?
The U symbol stands for Universal. A U film should be suitable for audiences aged four years and over. However, it is impossible to predict what might upset a particular child, especially at this lower end of the category range.

What about works for children younger than four?
We rate films and videos aimed at very young viewers, such as Chuggington or Tinga Tinga Tales, U. However, we give them special BBFCinsight stating they are ‘particularly suitable for pre-school children’. Films or videos with this BBFCinsight should raise no significant issues in terms of discrimination, drugs,, imitable behaviour, language, nudity, sex, threat or violence. What does PG mean?
PG stands for Parental Guidance. This means a film is suitable for general viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children. A PG film should not unsettle a child aged around eight or older. Parents should consider whether the content may upset younger, or more sensitive, children.

Are all PG films made for younger audiences?
No. Some films are given a PG certificate but have not been made with a young audience in mind. A recent example of a film mostly enjoyed by grown ups but passed PG would be Saving Mr. Banks. However, the certificate means that any issues in the work are appropriate for the majority of this age group and nothing should upset a child of eight or over. What does the 12A symbol mean?
Films classified 12A and video works classified 12 contain material that is not generally suitable for children aged under 12. No one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult. Adults planning to take a child under 12 to view a 12A film should consider whether the film is suitable for that child. To help them decide, we recommend that they check the BBFCinsight for that film in advance. Watch our video about 12A.
What's the difference between 12A and 12?
The 12A requires an adult to accompany any child under 12 seeing a 12A film at the cinema. This is enforced by cinema staff and a cinema may lose its license if adult accompaniment is not enforced for children under 12 admitted to a 12A film. Accompanied viewing cannot be enforced in the home, so the 12 certificate remains for DVD/Blu-ray, rather than the 12A. The 12 is also a simpler system for retailers. It means they cannot sell or rent the item unless the customer is over the age of 12.
What does the 15 symbol mean?
No-one under 15 is allowed to see a 15 film at the cinema or buy/rent a 15 rated video. 15 rated works are not suitable for children under 15 years of age.

Are there any limits on what sort of theme a work can have at 15?
No theme is prohibited, provided the treatment is appropriate for 15 year olds.
What might I see in a 15 rated film or video?
Any of the following:
- strong violence
- frequent strong language (e.g. 'f***').
- portrayals of sexual activity
- strong verbal references to sex
- sexual nudity
- brief scenes of sexual violence or verbal references to sexual violence
- discriminatory language or behaviour
- drug taking
What does the 18 symbol mean?
Films rated 18 are for adults. No-one under 18 is allowed to see an 18 film at the cinema or buy / rent an 18 rated video. No 18 rated works are suitable for children.

Are there any limits on what sort of theme a work can have at 18?
No theme is prohibited at 18. Adults are free to choose their own entertainment provided the material is not illegal or potentially harmful, so it is possible some themes tackled at 18 may be offensive even to some adult viewers.
What sort of issues might I find in an 18 film or video?
18 works are for adults and can contain strong issues such as:
- very strong violence
- frequent strong language (e.g. 'f***') and / or very strong language (e.g. ‘c***’)
- strong portrayals of sexual activity
- scenes of sexual violence
- strong horror
- strong blood and gore
- real sex (in some circumstances)
- discriminatory language and behaviour
What does R18 mean?
The R18 category is a special and legally-restricted classification primarily for explicit works of consenting sex or strong fetish material involving adults. Films may only be shown to adults in specially licensed cinemas, and video works may be supplied to adults only in licensed sex shops. R18 videos may not be supplied by mail order.
For full details of the legal restrictions for these works click on the BBFC Guidelines document below.
A film festival is an organized, extended presentation of films in one or more cinemas or screening venues, usually in a single city or region. Increasingly, film festivals show some films outdoors. Films may be of recent date and, depending upon the festival's focus, can include international and domestic releases. Some festivals focus on a specific film-maker or genre (e.g., film noir) or subject matter (e.g., horror film festivals). A number of film festivals specialise in short films of a defined maximum length.

LIFE AFTER 11 YEARS OF CAPTIVITY, RAPE AND TORTURE: MICHELLE KNIGHT'S STORY
he thick air smelled like stale beer, urine and rotten black beans, and many of the windows were boarded up. Knight couldn’t believe Emily spent time here. “She’s right downstairs, putting some laundry in the machine,” Castro said. “Why don’t you come with me upstairs so you can go ahead and pick out a puppy?” Knight hesitated. She didn’t hear any puppies. She didn’t hear Emily either. But Castro had an answer for everything: The puppies were sleeping, and Emily would be up any moment. He pointed to the staircase, and Knight started climbing.
On the second-floor landing, he directed her to a small bedroom with pink walls. “They’re under there,” he said, pointing to the dresser. Knight took another step forward and—BAM!—Castro slammed the door shut behind them. He then slapped one hand over her mouth and nose and the other against her head, and pushed her to the ground. Knight started shaking. She couldn’t scream. All she could do was stare at the two metal poles on either side of the room, and the taut wire running between them. Castro tied an orange extension cord around her ankles and wrists, yanked her limbs together behind her back, then wrapped the cord around her neck. “You’re only gonna be here for a little while. I’m not gonna keep you that long,” she remembers him saying as he unzipped his pants and masturbated until he ejaculated on her.
Castro then sat on a stool, breathing heavily. “Now I need you to be still so I can put you up on these poles,” he said, shoving Knight onto her stomach. He tied a second extension cord to the one around her limbs and neck, then attached it to the wire hanging between the poles. Suddenly, Knight felt herself being roughly hoisted into the air. Her entire body dangled, face down, in a plank position about a foot above the floor, neck cocked, back arched slightly, hands and feet bound behind her. Castro stuffed a smelly sock in Knight’s mouth, covered it with duct tape, blasted the radio and walked out. She heard the door slam shut and his feet pounding down the stairs. Then, nothing.
We’re sitting outside a restaurant in downtown Cleveland. Knight, who’s 34 now, wears a magenta and black-leopard-print blouse, dark jeans and pink lipstick. She gently pats her short blond hair and points to a meaty green animal tattooed around her right wrist. “This is a protection dragon,” she says. She raises her left sleeve and drops her shoulder, revealing five large roses cascading down her arm, each one covered in drops of blood. “Every rose is for every abortion that I had in the house.”

Draft Proposal
Introduction
The purpose of this report is to help me prepare for my pitch and to sell my ideas to film producers encouraging them to get the film made. In my report i will be discussing the primary and secondary research which i have gathered from varies of unique short film on YouTube. For my target audience i will be making it based on the likeness of film producers who are interested in the genre of thrillers and horrors. I will be making my idea simple and basic with no background story, this is because it will interest the audience more as it means they will have to think more making up their own interpretations. My film will distributed online by exporting it and pasting on to my you tube channel.
My idea
The idea of my short film involves two chracters one male the other female. They begin talking to each other on a dating website who the girl believes she loves. He eventually talks her into meeting where he then kidnaps her and sexually assaults her. The twist is the girl fights back shooting him in the penis signifying the revenge taking the dominance away from the male.
Target Audience
The audience which I will be building the film upon will be of 18 and above, this is because through my research I learnt the majority who enjoy watching thrillers and horrors are of this age. I feel because the main character is female the audience who watch the film are most likely to be females, this is because they may feel relatable to the main character.
Trends
The trends I have being looking all contain a torturing aspect for example in saw they are captured and then tortured in order for their survival, also in the short film captive the male is being tortured for trespassing by ghost like character. This in particular trend inspired my idea of a female being tortured by a male who is unable to escape. I have choose to have violence in my film specifically sexual violence this is because i want to show the dominance which men have on women through sexually violating the female, infers that in reality girls feel victimized to men and in serious cases are raped because they are seen as sexual objects.
Genre and Narrative
The genre i have choose for my short film is thriller, this is because my film includes violence throughout. I also will be including a twist ending my short film open. therefore leaving the audience in suspense which they will have to interpret themselves. Also making it a thriller such as the shot types i will be including such as mid shots and extreme close ups. The narrative structure for my film is non linear, this is where it will be shown in reverse order revealing the main story plot at the beginning is where the girl is getting abused. i Choose this structure because it will hook the audience straight away making it more interesting.
Costs:
Camera: FREE from college
Transport: FREE bus travel for teens
Food: £10-£15
Budget
I will have a budget of no more than £30 this is because the most expensive things are free as i will be borrowing these items from my college, equipment such as lighting source and cameras. I will be spending money on objects such as rope and makeup such as fake blood which will be no more than about £10.
Inspiration for my short film
The short film captive was one of the films which influenced me for my own short film. The idea of being captured and tortured really interested me as the audience as it made me feel tensed and confused and this show i would like my target audience to feel whilst watching my short film. However in this film the man was being tortured by a ghost which i wanted to change making my film being more realistic using a real life man as i feel this is more engaging for the audience. The film is left on an open ending making the audience wonder if he is eventually killed or released. Which led me to similarly do the same for my own film making the ending open as its more interesting to watch rather revealing the ending and not feeling as suspended or engaged.
Film rating
The film rating for my short film will be of 15 age and above this is because it will contain scenes of physical violence and aggression of sexual nature. Not suitable for ages below 15.
Hook
The hook i will be including will right at the start of where we see the face of a girl covered in blood with facial expressions looking confused and scared. The actress will make the audience feel engaged as they are unaware of what is happening to her from the whereabouts she has been located tired to a chair in an abandoned car park.
Time
Timing is very important and must be stuck to there will be given deadlines to those such as camera crew the characters and so on all on the same time of the production. If it comes down to deadlines being not met them producers will be losing out on money as well as having to spend extra buying time to spend on the production to complete. I will be mostly filming on the weekends this is due to me having more time on the weekends spend for the production.
Location
The locations i have choose for my short film is an abandoned car park this is because i feel a car park gives of the sense of mystery and suspense. Which means the audience will feel get a sense of atmosphere whilst the audience watch to see what is going to happen. I will need to keep in mind that i specifically want the location of an abandoned car park therefore it will need to be film late at night or on a day its less busy during the week instead of the weekend.
Unique Selling Point(USP)
The USP for my short film is that its based on a real life story of a girl who was captured for 14 years and repeatedly sexually assaulted her whole life. I also will be including a twist in my film, leaving the audience in suspense as the end will be opened.

Inspiration for my short film
My idea was influence by the film 50 shades of grey this is because i felt many in particular females where interested in the plot of the two characters, male and female interacting with each other in a sexual nature. In the film the male character called Christine grey also known as Mr grey enjoys feeling dominant with women connecting with them in a physical way, he endures torturing females as this makes him pleasured and excitable. This inspired me to come up with an similar idea of where a male tortures a young female for his pleasure and likeness. I felt this idea would engage the audience as its a relate-able to their ordinary life as usual men feel pleasurable to women in some serious cases causing crimes such as rape and murder.
